“Belugas are often known as the canaries of the sea,” the trainer said as the whale chirped right on cue. She moved her hand over the blowhole. By covering and uncovering it, she seemed to play the whale like a horn player with a mute. The sounds reminded Joley of cartoons - a creaking door, a blubbery fart. She giggled but her mother’s expression was stony.
The dolphins began to arc and leap. Water exploded like a volcano as they plunged into it. Joely looked to her mother to share in the excitement, but there was no point. Dory had made it clear how she felt about the show, something about it being too choreographed.
Joely felt like the rope in a game of tug of war. She was enthralled, but her mother’s disdain for the spectacle took some of the fun out of it.
